Last weekend I took the Eurostar to London to see the new Marilyn Monroe exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. It had been popping up on social the past few months, and despite feeling under the weather, I was determined to go.

Part of the draw was Marilyn herself, of course, but part of it was that I'd recently been gifted Marilyn and Her Books, which offers a fascinating glimpse into a side of her that often gets overshadowed.

What stayed with me from both the book and the exhibition wasn’t the glamour or even the tragedy. It was her curiosity. She read constantly. She underlined passages. She studied psychology, poetry, literature, and philosophy. She seemed deeply engaged in the process of trying to understand herself and the world around her.

As I wandered through the galleries, I found myself thinking about that word: curiosity.

I'm writing this from Paris, where I've been for a little over a week. After dreaming about spending extended time here for years, it feels both exactly as I imagined and nothing like I imagined at all.

There are moments when I walk through the city and feel almost giddy that I'm actually here. Then there are moments when I'm standing in Monoprix staring at a label I can't decipher, searching for a word I know I've learned but can't quite retrieve, or sitting at a café with my notebook open, wondering why a project I've worked on for years still feels unfinished.

Over the past few months, I've been struck by how many of the things I love are currently frustrating me.

French is one of them, though perhaps that’s not surprising. Learning a language is humbling on the best of days.

Ballet is another. After years of classes, private lessons, performances, and practice, I still encounter regular reminders of what I can’t do. Lately it’s been sous-sus. Not en pointe. Not some advanced combination. A basic sous-sus in ballet slippers!

Writing belongs on the list, too. The memoir continues to unfold in its own time rather than mine, which is not a timeline I appreciate.

Even reading feels different these days. I’ve always been someone who buys more books than she can possibly read. Recently, I’ve found myself picking them up and setting them down again. Nothing seems to hold my attention in quite the same way.

For a while, I wondered if I was losing interest in things that had once brought me joy.

The thought caught me off guard. Ballet has been part of my life for years. Writing even longer (Hip Tranquil Chick turns 20 this year!). French has occupied countless mornings, lessons, notebooks, and Duolingo streaks. The idea that I might be drifting away from these pursuits felt unsettling, as though I were losing touch with parts of myself.

But the more I sat with it, the more I realized the frustration wasn't coming from a lack of interest. It was coming from the fact that I cared so much.

If I didn’t care about French, I wouldn’t mind struggling through conversations.

If I didn’t care about ballet, I wouldn’t notice what wasn’t improving.

If I didn’t care about writing, I wouldn’t feel impatient with the pace of the book.

What I was experiencing wasn’t indifference. It was longing. I want more fluency, more progress, more ease, more evidence that all the years I’ve devoted to these pursuits are leading somewhere.

Perhaps that’s why Marilyn’s curiosity struck me so deeply. Reading about her, I wasn’t encountering someone who had arrived. I was encountering someone who continued searching. Despite all her success, she remained a student. She kept reading, questioning, exploring, and reaching toward something she hadn’t yet become.

The older I get, the less convinced I am that life is about arriving anywhere. Every time I feel confident in one area, another reminds me how much I still have to learn.

Eleven days into this Paris adventure, I certainly don’t have any grand conclusions. What I do know is that the things frustrating me most right now are also the things I care about most deeply.

As I walked back to the train station after the exhibition, I found myself thinking about Marilyn’s books. Not the famous photographs or the iconic white dress, but the underlined passages and dog-eared pages. The evidence of someone still learning, still searching, still becoming.

I started thinking about how easy it is to romanticize the finished product. The fluent speaker. The accomplished dancer. The published author. The person who appears to have it all figured out.

What we rarely see are the years spent in conversation with a dream. The countless ordinary days of showing up, trying again, getting discouraged, learning something new, and continuing anyway.

Tomorrow I'll return to my French lesson. I'll keep working on the memoir. I'll head to ballet class in French on Friday. Not because I've mastered any of them, but because, despite the frustration, I'm still curious about what happens next.

The past month has been filled with peonies, performances, long conversations, preparations for Paris, and the fullness that arrives when life begins expanding again after a quieter season.

My mom was here for a week, June is approaching with all its birthday-month energy, and somewhere in the middle of it all I’ve been trying to keep up with the ordinary rhythms of daily life too (including writing to you—one of my favorite monthly rituals).

There’s been more movement lately, socially and emotionally. More noise. More experiences. More color. More moments that linger longer than expected.

I’ve been thinking about the Anaïs Nin quote above and how certain seasons of life ask us to stretch beyond the shape we’ve grown comfortable inhabiting. The days feel fuller. The emotions feel more layered. You realize you’re carrying anticipation, uncertainty, excitement, tenderness, gratitude, and exhaustion all at once.

Life Lately remains my place to pause inside all of it and take stock of what’s been unfolding along the way.

Below are a few glimpses from the past month. Pour something soothing. Reach for your journal to do the same. Settle in. I’m so glad you’re here!

What I’m working on:

• Preparing for a weekend getaway in the mountains, the logistics of leaving my office space behind, and beginning to shape June in Paris (aka birthday month).

• Balancing client sessions, packing lists, Substack drafts, and quality time with loved ones.

• Keeping my body strong through ballet and Reformer while also trying to respect its limits (which are many).

Lately, I’ve been noticing parts of myself I haven’t had to confront in a long time.

After my relationship ended 15 months ago, I spent a long stretch on my own. I had my routines, my space, and a familiar way of moving through the day. Even when things were emotional or complicated, I was mostly processing them privately and on my own time.

What I didn’t expect was how different it would feel to be emotionally engaged again after so many years.

Recently, I caught myself mid-sentence, sitting across from someone, realizing I was being more direct than I would have been a year ago. I could hear it as I said it, and at the same time I noticed the part of me wondering how it would land. That awareness used to come later, after I’d had time to think things through. Now it’s happening while I’m still inside the moment.

Around the same time, I was rereading A Doll’s House. I kept thinking about the shock of seeing yourself differently while still inside the life you’ve been living. Small realizations arriving mid-pattern, mid-response. The moment where you suddenly see the role you’ve been playing while you’re still playing it.

You may recognize this in your own way, that shift from understanding something after the fact to noticing it as it’s happening.

That’s the part that feels unfamiliar.

I’m noticing how little distance there is now between what’s happening and how it feels. I’ll be in the middle of a conversation and suddenly aware that something matters to me more than I expected it to. I can feel myself wanting clarity in real time. What did that mean? Where does this stand? What happens next? I can see the impulse clearly, even when there isn’t an answer yet.

I’m also more aware of old patterns as they appear. The instinct to smooth something over, to soften my tone, to make things easier than they actually feel. Sometimes I still do it. Other times, I catch myself in the middle of it and choose differently, even in a small way. The work feels less about becoming a completely different person and more about noticing the pattern while it’s happening and trying not to automatically follow it.

I notice it in smaller ways, too. I still move through my days in the way I always have. I keep my commitments, follow through on plans, and maintain the routines that ground me. From the outside, very little probably looks different.

What’s changed is the internal experience of it.

I’ll leave a conversation and realize I’m still thinking about it hours later. I’ll notice myself replaying something that was said, or wondering how something landed. I can feel the part of me that wants reassurance and clarity.

For a long time, part of my steadiness came from knowing how I would move through things emotionally. I knew how to regain footing if something felt uncomfortable. I knew how to step back, process privately, and return composed.

Now I’m noticing myself while I’m still inside the experience.

Over the past few months, I’ve written about loosening some of the structures I had relied on for years. I thought that shift would mostly feel freeing. In many ways, it has. But I’m also realizing how much those structures protected me from vulnerability.

And maybe this is part of what happens when you begin again after a long time. You don’t just meet someone new. You meet versions of yourself that haven’t had to speak up in years. The more secure parts, the hopeful parts, the guarded parts, the younger parts that still want reassurance.

I don’t think this means I’m moving backward. If anything, I think I’m becoming more aware of myself in real time than I’ve ever been before. But awareness and change are not the same thing. Sometimes awareness simply means noticing the old reflex as it rises and deciding, little by little, whether you still want to live from it.

This is the messy middle.

April has me back in DC long enough to feel the repetition of things again.

The same routes. The same classes. The same places to sit with a cup of tea. And yet, moving through them doesn’t feel identical. I’m showing up to these days differently, even if the outline looks familiar.

There’s been more movement in some ways, less in others. A willingness to follow what’s interesting in the moment, even if it rearranges the plan. To stay when I would have left. To leave when I would have stayed.

Some shifts don’t announce themselves. They show up in smaller decisions… what I respond to, what I ignore, what I give more time than I intended.

Life Lately remains my place to pause and take stock of what’s been unfolding along the way. Below are a few glimpses from the past month.

What I’m working on:

• The Artist’s Way Salon is underway, and these early weeks are already revealing where I hesitate, where I open, what begins to move when there’s space to create. It connects to the rebellion I wrote about, especially in how I’m choosing where time and energy go.

• And in the background, June in Paris is beckoning.

• French pronunciation. It continues to baffle me.

What I’m consuming:

• I’ve been reading Confessions to the Moon a few lines at a time. Also returning to this nervous system book to better understand how quickly the body reacts before there’s time to think.

• Saw The Stranger and rewatched Before Sunrise.

• Savoring Raspberry Rose Poppi, Asian pears, and Trader Joe’s Olive & Herbs mixed nuts.

What I’m loving:

• Nights filled with inked stories and late-night laughter over rosé.

• A strong finishing detail like red lips, a statement ring, or subtle accessories.

• Saying goodbye to my senior pug Mookie has left a real absence. It shows up in specific moments, in routines that are no longer there.

• There’s new energy entering my life. It has its own pace. It shifts how my days unfold, what I stay for, what I move toward.

Over the past few months, the rebellion I wrote about in October has taken on a stronger presence. It’s no longer just a closing of my planner or an afternoon drifting into tea. It’s showing up in ways that catch me off guard. Small, subtle, and unmistakable.

I don’t always recognize myself.

Maybe you’ve felt this too. That subtle sense of shifting, where familiar patterns begin to loosen and something else starts to emerge, even if you can’t quite name it yet.

The other day, I was sitting on a bench with an iced green tea, my name written on the cup as “Coco,” reading about Simone de Beauvoir and authenticity. It struck me, the contradiction of it. Using a different name while reading about becoming more fully oneself.

And yet, it didn’t feel inauthentic. If anything, it felt like a small permission. A loosening. I think many of us reach a point where the identity we’ve carefully shaped begins to feel less fixed than we once believed.

Recently, I’ve stayed up far later than my usual rhythm would allow, lingering in conversations or ideas late into the night. I’ll go for a walk when there’s a self-imposed deadline I know I won’t meet, not because I don’t care, but because something in me cares more about the air, the movement, the pause.

It can feel disorienting to move this way, especially if you’ve spent years being reliable, responsive, and on top of things. To pause instead of push goes against a lifetime of conditioning.

I’ve also found myself stepping away from things I once arranged my entire schedule around. This year’s ballet festival, for instance. A decision that surprised me, given how much it has meant to me, but when I looked closely, there was a clear pull. My energy and resources wanted to be placed elsewhere.

There’s also a new directness that feels unfamiliar. When I notice myself being talked at, I point it out or shift the conversation rather than accommodating it. I’m less interested in performing or smoothing things over, and less inclined to make things easy at my own expense.

I can feel how ingrained that reflex has been, and how much intention it takes to choose differently in the moment.

I’m noticing a shift in how I relate to my time and attention. Less energy goes to what leaves me depleted. I’m pulling back from habits that no longer feel neutral.

Some things remain unresolved.

And for those of us who have been taught to seek clarity, to define, to understand, this can feel like unfamiliar territory. Certain connections are allowed to exist without deciding what they are or where they’re going.

Even my relationship with structure feels looser. Less something to adhere to and more something to engage with as needed.

The old patterns haven’t disappeared. They still buzz in the background, reminding me of who I’ve been for decades: responsible, attentive, capable of holding it all.

Alongside them, something else is taking shape. I’m less interested in holding everything together. More willing to disappoint a plan than disappoint myself, more willing to leave something unfinished in order to feel something fully, more willing to choose based on alignment rather than expectation.

There’s a disorientation in that, a sense of being slightly unmoored from the identity I’ve carefully built and relied on.

And yet underneath it, there’s also a steadiness. It doesn’t come from control. It comes from trust. Trust that if I stay up too late, I will find my rhythm again. That if I miss a deadline, the world will not unravel. That if I choose differently than I once would have, I’m not losing myself, I’m meeting myself in a new way.

I’m beginning to see that this kind of rebellion isn’t really about pushing against something. It’s about no longer performing a version of myself that no longer fits. It’s a turning toward what feels true now.

And like most meaningful shifts, it carries both grief and relief. Grief for the self who held so much so well, and relief for the self who no longer has to.

Perhaps this is part of midlife. A willingness to question what we’ve carried for so long and to ask what still fits.

So here I am, in April, still making my lists, still caring, still showing up, but also wandering off mid-task, letting things breathe, speaking more plainly, choosing more freely.

I’m becoming someone I don’t fully recognize yet, and learning to trust her anyway.

It’s been just over three weeks since I left Paris, and I’m only just beginning to understand what happened there.

At the time, it felt like I was simply living my life in a different setting—café tables and ballet classes in the morning, seeing clients across time zones in the afternoon, the rhythm of writing, walking, studying French. It was full and textured, in many ways exactly what I had imagined.

But something else was happening underneath. Paris changed the way I experienced myself. It was gradual. Subtle enough that I didn’t fully recognize it while I was there.

In hindsight, I think Paris was swallowing me whole. I just didn’t know it at the time.

At home, there’s a continuity to me, a way I can feel myself from the outside in. In Paris, that shifted. It felt like being slowly pulled further inside my own experience.

The city didn’t orient itself around me. It didn’t reflect me back in the ways I’m used to. And without that, I lost some of my usual reference points.

In my daily life, I know who I am through my roles, my routines, and how I move with other people. I can feel my footing in conversation. I know how I tend to show up, how I create connection, how I find my place.

In Paris, that all felt less defined.

I could feel it in small moments. Walking into a café and not quite knowing who I was in that space. Noticing my instinct to smooth the moment, to create connection, and sometimes choosing not to. Coming home at night and realizing I didn’t have a clear story about how the day had gone or what it meant.

I wasn’t observing my life in the usual way. I was fully inside it, without the same sense of distance or clarity, and I didn’t yet understand what that would change.

I see it more clearly now.

March brings the promise of beginnings. The first pink blossoms are appearing on once-barren trees, like the ones above that I spotted on my walk home from the office last week.

After the inwardness of winter, there’s a subtle turning outward again, a kind of emerging from hibernation. And, let’s be honest, it was one long, cold winter!

March often carries that kind of blooming energy, when winter loosens its grip, spring unfurls, and life rearranges itself in small ways.

February closed with a final stretch of Paris days, and then suddenly it was back to DC life—clients returning in person, neighborhood walks, reconnecting with friends over brunch, ballet, and art (went straight to the National Gallery of Art to see the Mary Cassatt exhibit).

I’m writing this from Costa Rica during an annual getaway with my mom. It’s filled with papaya, sunshine filtering through the palms, books stacked beside the bed, unhurried mornings of writing, and seeing clients from afar.

Three places in just a few weeks, each with its own tempo. Paris lingers in memory, DC settles back into daily life, and Costa Rica invites a slower pace.

Life Lately remains my place to pause and take stock of what’s been unfolding along the way. Below are a few glimpses from the past month.

If March feels like a moment of possibility for you or simply a small shift toward welcomed light, I hope this space feels like good company.

What I’m working on:

• Holding space for the Coterie as our year together continues to deepen. Preparing the Artist’s Way Salon for its April debut. And getting ready to welcome spring with the upcoming Seasonal Soirée.

• Returning to the familiar pace of DC life after a vivid February abroad.

• Giving recent experiences a little breathing room before deciding what they mean.

• And in a little future-casting, I’ve booked June (birthday month!) in Paris.

What I’m consuming:

• A final Paris moment is still lingering with me. One evening, with this clear view of the Eiffel Tower, Cigarettes After Sex came on my headphones. I now have their albums on repeat and am especially obsessed with Apocalypse and Sweet.

• Reading How to Be Authentic: Simone de Beauvoir and the Quest for Fulfillment and The Polyvagal Solution: Vagus Nerve-Calming Practices to Soothe Stress, Ease Emotional Overwhelm, and Build Resilience by Rebecca Kase.

• My weight in papaya and whatever fruit happens to be ripening nearby.

What I’m loving:

• The intimacy of those final Paris days. Returning to familiar streets, favorite corners, and cafés that already feel like part of my rhythm there.

• The comfort of coming home again. My petite pink palace. Neighborhood walks, meetups, and deep connections that anchor me back into DC life. And the small acts of laundry, groceries, and familiar pink floral mugs.

• The early hints of spring in DC. Longer light in the evenings. The promise of cherry blossoms not far away.

• And now, this brief pause in Costa Rica. Warm air, slower mornings, and the spaciousness that comes from stepping out of routine again.

What I’m wearing:

• Paris layers that carried me through February. Here’s my packing list and my travel outfit is shown above. Lots of layers!

• Back in DC, the familiar uniform returns: black layers, boots, red lips, and a scarf tied just so.

• And for this week in Costa Rica: sleeveless layers, open-toed slides, a big hat, oversized sunglasses, and generous amounts of sunscreen.

What I’m noticing:

• A single month can hold so much from movement, connection, surprise, and heaviness too. Some days expansive, others were tender at the edges.

• The nervous system often needs more time to process an experience than the calendar allows.

• And spring arriving quietly in the background reminds me that life keeps moving.

• Letting certain stories close without needing to rewrite them.

And a few moments that didn’t make it into the essay.

February and I have history.

In recent years, it has carried anniversaries. Dates that once held weight. Memories that brush up against the present whether invited or not. It became a month I approached with intention.

So this year, I decided to meet February somewhere else.

Paris felt like the right setting. I arrived at sunrise filled with anticipation, ballet slippers tucked beside black tights in my carry-on, the sky pink and wintry above the city. Within days, I had the strange sensation that Paris may swallow me whole.

I told myself the month would be about rhythm. Work. Writing. Connection. Movement. Reclaiming February as something expansive.

My days found their cadence quickly. Mornings began with green tea and mint steeping in my small kitchen. The window opening onto a sweep of Paris rooftops as the hum of early traffic drifted up from the street below.

Tights pulled on, a scarf looped at my neck before heading to ballet class in the Marais. There is comfort in the repetition of the barre, returning to the same movements until they settle into the body. My teacher even calls me her chouchou (favorite), which made it very easy to keep showing up.

Afternoons were devoted mostly to clients, conversations stretching across oceans while Paris moved outside the window. It grounded me in the work I’m meant to do.

And somewhere in the margins of it all, romance appeared. Lingering dinners that stretched late into the night. Champagne to celebrate nothing in particular. The sweetness of being seen in a new setting. The kind of connection that feels bright and easy at first.

In midlife, you notice more. Tone. Follow-through. Alignment. You also notice when something is beautiful but finite.

My second-to-last night in Paris held a flickering glow. There was a moment of clarity that what we had shared was complete. Attraction is powerful. So is discernment. I walked away without looking back.

The following evening, my final night in the city, I slipped into a small speakeasy for jazz at Le 1905 with a new friend. Low lights. Candles. A narrow staircase. Mismatched velvet furniture. Laughter and a long conversation that felt easy. I sat there listening to the music and felt something settle inside me. It felt like the right ending to a month of reclamation.

February moved through its anniversaries while I was there. I walked along the Seine and cried on the Metro on one of those dates, letting the memories rise and fall. And yet I was standing upright inside them.

Reclaiming February was never about finding love in Paris. It was about discovering that the month no longer holds the weight it once did.

Romance shimmered. I appreciated it without gripping. Work continued. Ballet continued. Tea steeped each morning. I kept my rituals, my standards, and my word to myself.

On the plane home, I felt something I hadn’t associated with February in a long time: lightness. Not because everything unfolded perfectly, but because I stayed open. I paid attention. I walked away when it was time. I chose jazz and friendship and movement and work and my own discernment.

I imagine I’m still processing parts of it. Months like this rarely reveal everything at once.

But February is no longer the month I approach with caution. Between ballet class, café corners, glasses of champagne, and a low-lit jazz room, Paris had swallowed me whole.

And along the way, February rewrote itself.
